First Supporter

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE WATER

New for 2024

“First Supporter” embodies a guiding principle crucial to the integrity and effectiveness of any campaign, particularly when it intersects with environmental activism and Indigenous participation. It underscores the importance of ensuring that the leadership of the directly impacted community takes the forefront in decision-making and strategic direction. This principle is not just a method but a foundational ethic that respects and uplifts the voices and wisdom of those most affected by environmental and social issues. We provide a clear framework for applying the “First Supporter” approach, demonstrating its versatile applicability across various forms of organizing. By adhering to this principle, we foster a more equitable, inclusive, and powerful movement that truly resonates with the values and needs of impacted communities, driving meaningful change from the ground up.

Connection Indigenous Changemakers with the communities they serve

Indigenous Together Biennial Gathering

In September 2023, we launched “Indigenous Together,” a pioneering event designed to bridge Indigenous nonprofits with the communities they are dedicated to serving. This biennial gathering is a dynamic platform for collaboration, sharing best practices, and forging deeper connections. On alternating years, we spotlight the remarkable stories of select nonprofits through compelling video narratives, showcasing their impactful work and community engagement. “Indigenous Together” not only celebrates the collective efforts of these organizations but also amplifies the voices and needs of the Indigenous communities they support.

Indigenous Peoples Day

Providing an Indigenous Diaspora led indigenous peoples day event in Tacoma.

Indigenous Peoples Day: Honoring Our Hosts

This October, Tacoma celebrates its first Indigenous Peoples Day, uniquely themed “Honoring Our Hosts” to pay homage to the Puyallup people, the traditional custodians of the land. Led by non-Puyallup Native individuals from Tacoma’s Indigenous diaspora, the event aims to unite the community through a day filled with cultural presentations, dialogues, and activities. This inaugural gathering sets the stage for an annual tradition, reflecting on our collective journey towards understanding, respect, and shared stewardship of the land. Join us in this momentous celebration of Indigenous cultures, resilience, and the enduring legacy of the Puyallup people.

Connection Day

The Day before EArth Day, Connection Day serves to recognize and honor the interconnectedness of all life

Connection Day

The day before Earth Day.   Connection Day embodies a global call to recognize and honor the interconnectedness of all life, inspired by the principle of Mitakuye Oyasin, meaning “all my relations” or “we are all related.” This inaugural event in Tacoma seeks to unite local communities, with a significant focus on Indigenous leadership and wisdom from members of the Puyallup Tribe and beyond, in a collective reflection on our shared responsibilities towards Earth. The lowkey event will conclude with a community clean-up of the area in which the event is held.  As we prepare for Earth Day, Connection Day serves as a profound reminder of the bonds we share with each other and our planet.
