HEAL for Reentry is a non-profit organization that works to help Indigenous individuals transition back into their communities after serving time in jail. The mission of the organization, whose name stands for “Helping Enhance Aboriginal Lives,” is as the name suggests; to enhance the lives of Indigenous people and reduce the high recidivism rate among Native communities.

The issue of Indigenous incarceration is a pressing one, as Indigenous people are twice as likely to be incarcerated compared to their white counterparts. This disparity is particularly pronounced in Washington State, where Indigenous individuals make up 2.5% of custodial sentences, despite only representing 1.1% of the US population.

To address this issue, HEAL has developed a unique approach that focuses on reconnecting Indigenous individuals with their culture and traditions. The organization believes that by helping individuals reconnect with their roots and heritage, they can better overcome the challenges of reentry and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

At the core of HEAL for Reentry is a strong sense of brotherhood. The organization provides a supportive community where individuals can form close bonds and support each other through their journeys. This sense of community is key to the success of the program, with members like Bobby G Hicks expressing their happiness and fulfillment in being a part of HEAL. Hicks notes that “It all came together” when like-minded Native American men who have served time came together to support each other and stay out of trouble through the guidance and practice of traditional ways.

HEAL is a promising solution to the issue of Indigenous incarceration and recidivism and by fostering a sense of brotherhood and connecting individuals with their culture and heritage, HEAL is helping Indigenous people to overcome challenges and build a better future.
