The Paddle to Standing Rock might have been a hastily arranged unofficial canoe journey, but it was done in the sacred tradition and spirit of the main annual northwest event. It took place to honor and encourage the ongoing efforts to protect the water at Standing Rock and the synergy with this years actual canoe journey did not go unnoticed.

The Paddle to Nisqually, attracted the largest gathering of participating tribes in the event’s history. The theme of the journey was “Don’t forget the water,” highlighting the importance of protecting water resources.

As the canoes made their way down the Missouri River, it was heartening to see so many coastal communities come to stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Nation. This gathering demonstrates the growing concern over the protection of water resources, and it is hoped that those in power are taking notice.

The event was captured in an excellent video by Free Speech TV, further spreading awareness of the importance of protecting water resources.
